ExamSupport.com is an online venture that sells learning packs - containing video, audio and electronic documents - to students preparing for exams, particularly the Irish Junior and Leaving Certificates.
Uniquely, the website offers an innovative, synchronised video display. One window shows the teacher’s lesson; the other shows the teacher’s notes, as they write to the whiteboard.
In 2006, Clear Voice Systems (the company behind ExamSupport) wanted to redesign its website, to make it more usable and user-friendly, and to include proposed new features and functions.
We began by creating a new Information Architecture (IA) document, setting out the sitemap for the redesigned website, and agreeing this document with the client.
We then worked with Clear Voice Systems to produce a set of wireframes (a prototype version of the site), outlining in detail the proposed user interactions on the website.
We produced these wireframes iteratively - starting with a simple set of pages and functions, and working with the client to review and develop each version, until we resolved all of the design issues.
Twice during the design process, we conducted user testing on the wireframes, which helped us to improve usability.
We also held design review workshops during the process, to ensure that we fully understood the client’s requirements and got their feedback throughout the process.
At the end of the design process, we delivered the Wireframes to the client, who passed them on their developers, who were able to understand them without difficulty.
Feedback from ExamSupport users suggested that the site’s usability had significantly improved, particularly the shopping process.
Indeed, in late 2007, Clear Voice Systems requested that we carry out a “Phase 2″ design project, to accommodate further features and functions on the website.
The process for Phase 2 was similar to that described above, and we delivered a set of interactive wireframes. At the time of writing, the Phase 2 wireframes are being used by the client to build the latest iteration of the ExamSupport website.
